Time to Celebrate National Avocado Day!

National Avocado Day? Now there’s a holiday you can really sink your teeth into. At Food Town, our team loves that pear-shaped fruit! (Yes, fruit – you read that right!) Surprised to find out the avocado is a fruit? Just wait until you hear this. It’s actually considered a berry because of its fleshy pulp and seed.

The truth is, there are all sorts of berry interesting facts to learn about guacamole’s key ingredient. Here is a bit more avocado info you probably didn’t already know:

  • Avocados contain more potassium than bananas, are loaded with fatty acids and fiber — and can even help lower your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Healthy, right?
  • Avocados help encourage blood flow to the brain and help keep you alert! (Talk about food for thought!)
  • You can peel avocados and eat them like apples or incorporate them into your favorite yummy recipes. Some of our favorites? Guacamole, avocado toast, salads, dressing, burgers and so many more. Scroll to the bottom of this post, and be sure to visit our Pinterest page, for delicious recipes sure to please all ages!

Of course, selecting a ripe avocado can be easier said than done. The folks at Avocados from Mexico offer all sorts of great tips, including:

  • Pick avocados that are darker in color to enjoy now, or those that are firm and greener to enjoy later.
  • Ripen your avocados in a paper bag with a banana.
  • Preserve an avocado half by coating it with lemon juice or olive oil, then covering and sealing it with plastic wrap. Refrigerate and enjoy later.

With the wide selection of avocados available at your neighborhood Food Town, we’re here to help you celebrate National Avocado Day in delicious style! We’ll see you soon, neighbor!
