Houston Mardi Gras Marches on

Don’t let COVID restrictions rain on your Houston Mardi Gras parade! Now, more than ever, it’s important to celebrate what we can, how we can. Rather than fretting over your minimized guest list, embrace the intimate environment of 10 people making merry together. Your neighborhood Food Town is stocked with every provision needed to make Mardi Gras 2021 memorable — for all the right reasons. After all, Mardi Gras has always embraced masks.

Get in the spirit of Fat Tuesday
Mardi Gras, French for “Fat Tuesday,” is all about indulging in everything you may (or may not) be giving up for Lent. It’s time to show off those cooking skills you honed during the lockdown! Whether your menu is fiercely traditional, featuring items like crawfish etouffee, or boldly creative with additions such as spiked King Cake pops, Food Town offers every ingredient you need.

Setting the stage outdoors gives you an excuse to use that turkey fryer for more than just Thanksgiving. For options outside of the region’s beloved mudbugs, fry up some catfish, shrimp, hushpuppies and chicken. You’ll delight in our 8800 W. Sam Houston Parkway store’s extra-large seafood department. Of course, with mouthwatering seafood available at all 30 Houston-area locations, you really can’t go wrong!

This year, why not take things a step further, making your favorite NOLA cocktails from scratch? Choose from our fresh and frozen fruit options for hurricanes and daiquiris. Make bourbon milk punch a house specialty, by steeping your favorite breakfast cereal in the milk first. You’ll want to make a separate, booze-free batch for the kids — it’s that good!

You Can Still Get Down and Dirty Rice, But …
Mardi Gras may be all fun and games but COVID is no laughing matter. To limit cross-contamination between guests, display food outdoors, and individually portion dishes when possible. Consider po’-boy sliders, instead of one big hoagie, or simply pre-plating desserts for your guests to grab and go. Don’t forget to space your seating six feet apart and stock up on hand soap and sanitizer.

The Show Must Go on
Since Houston Mardi Gras parades are canceled this year, we challenge our neighbors to start their own “krewes” and decorate houses and yards like parade floats! Keep the festive spirit alive and socially distanced, just like NOLA is doing this year. Cast votes to crown a king and queen of your community. Present them with a beautiful king cake or other sweet treats. Cross your fingers this beautiful Houston weather sticks around for Mardi Gras, because it may be the only day of the year it’s socially acceptable to blare Zydeco music on your front lawn!

However you plan to celebrate, we hope you’ll do so safely. Have fun — and stop by to see us soon, neighbor!
